I made these grilled fava beans a couple of weeks ago when we were upstate celebrating a friend’s birthday. Six of us, including baby Teo rented a house with a large, well-equipped kitchen and outdoor grill. We spent the lovely, warm days lying on the grass under a tree, dabbling in the cool stream which bordered the property, walking the gardens and orchard…. oh, and we cooked and ate very well! Stella and Alfie had a great time sniffing the air and running around the vast lawn.

I first saw a recipe for grilled fava beans on Heidi Swanson’s 101cookbooks and made it a couple of years ago.  I had forgotten about it until recently, when an abundance of favas arrived at the market. It’s a nice, easy and social way to eat the beans, and a perfect appetizer to enjoy as the grill heats up. Heidi tosses the fava beans in salt and olive oil before grilling, I grilled them plain.

 Grilled fava beans
All you do is lay a pound or so of whole fava beans on a hot grill and cook until they are blistered and charred, about 4 to 5 minutes. Turn them over and cook the other side for another few minutes. You want the beans to be soft and creamy inside, open one up to test.

Once they are cooked, remove them from the grill and place on a platter.

 

To eat; open each pod, take out the beans and pinch off the skin at one end to pop out the bean.

 

I put salt, pepper and olive oil on the table but we all enjoyed them plain.

Teo liked them too!
