celebrating the art of eating well

Blooming hill farm

grilled vegetables and salad

Last weekend we went up to Guy Jones’ Blooming Hill Farm. I love this place and think of it as the next best thing to having a country house. Located about 60 miles from the city, it only takes a little over an hour to get to.

We always end up spending most of the day, though we plan to have brunch, get some gorgeous organic produce and leave. But once we’re sitting outside eating Nadine’s grilled vegetables, sipping iced tea from Mason jars, we slow down. How could we not wander across the stream to talk to Stuart as he makes pizzas in the outdoor wood fired oven using, heirloom tomato sauce from last years tomato crop, basil they grow and organic cheese….It becomes increasingly difficult to pull your self back to the city.

Guy’s motto is “don’t buy food from strangers,” he writes this on weekly faxes he sends out to the restaurants the farm supplies. He certainly is no stranger as he has been delivering to Angelica Kitchen for over twenty years.
As soon as I found out you can visit the farm, I ventured up and now go every chance I get, in all seasons. When my mother was last here in late fall, we sat huddled around a fire in the barn eating sour dough pancakes and drinking hot cider. Delicious and cozy!

Besides being able to get the best just-picked organic produce at very reasonable prices and a delicious lunch or brunch, they also sell local cheeses, milk and potted plants.

I hope the photos below give you a sense of how special this place is, and that you’ll go next chance you get.

It’s always a dilemma deciding what to buy, but I managed to narrow it down to the selection below and since local AND organic blueberries are not easy to come by, I bought a case, with big plans to freeze them for the winter, but not sure how many will actually make it into the freezer!
